I purchased my Microsoft Office 2003 package in 2003 for my home personal computer for about US$399.00 plus tax. Out of the software package, I used the Microsoft Word and Excel most of the time for my office work and home-based business. Then the Microsoft Office 2007 was marketed in 2007 but I did not buy it because of the high price and I can still use the 2003 software package. On July 5, 2012, I searched the Amazon online store and found that the Microsoft Office Home & Business 2010 package (which can be registered and used by only one user and installed in only 2 personal computers-Windows 7/Vista/XP) is being sold for US$219.99 plus sales tax and shipping charges.
In May 2010, I started searching the Internet for free office software that can replace my Microsoft Office 2003 package. Fortunately, I found the OpenOffice.org website that offered all the software products similar to Microsoft Office products. I downloaded the OpenOffice.org software to my home personal computer and laptop, read the online Help instructions manual, and tested the WRITER and CALC programs which I will be using most of the time.
The OpenOffice.org software package consists of the following 6 programs :
Writer – a word processing program that can create letters, books, ebooks, manuscripts, signs, and many others
Calc – a versatile spreadsheet program that can perform so many calculations, formulas, analyses, budgets, financial statements, graphs, and many other calculations
Impress – a program that can create simple to colorful and interesting multimedia presentations
Draw – a program that can produce pictures, diagrams, dynamic 3D illustrations and others
Base – a program that can create different types of databases from where you can create tables, forms, queries and reports
Math – a program that can create mathematical equations with graphic user interface or by directly typing your formulas into the equation editor.
I am using the Writer program to:
Compose letters, books, ebooks, business proposals, contracts, wills, articles of incorporation, bylaws, and others; and
Draft or prepare my blog articles anywhere and anytime using either my home personal computer or my laptop without accessing the Internet.
I am using the Calc program to:
Record my keywords, arranged alphabetically, which I need in creating search engine-friendly blog titles and articles. The keyword spreadsheet saves me time and eliminates the repetitive searching for the same keywords;
Create my personal budgets, cash flows, income statements and balance sheets which are very important in preparing my annual income tax returns;
Make formulas and analyses to guide me if a business project is profitable or not; and
Design colorful signs and presentations.
The reasons why I like the OpenOffice.org software are :
The software package containing 6 programs (Writer, Calc, Impress, Draw, Base and Math) is free forever, not on trial basis. If I want to donate some money, I can go to the OpenOffice.org website. As shown in the Amazon store, the cost of Microsoft Office program is US$219.99 plus sales tax and shipping charges.
I can download the OpenOffice.org software in several computers, discs and USBs (universal serial bus).
The OpenOffice.org software is standalone and resides in my personal computer and/or laptop. I do not need an Internet connection to use the programs.
All the documents generated by Writer, Calc, Impress, Draw, Base and Math are stored either in my home personal computer, laptop and/or USBs.
The OpenOffice.org software in my computer and/or laptop is automatically updated by OpenOffice.org when I am online.
I can go online and copy the entire OpenOffice.org software in several discs, label them with OpenOffice.org trademark name and logo, and sell the discs to offices, schools, organizations and other entities that do not have Internet connection. According to OpenOffice.org, this is legal as long as the name of OpenOffice.org and logo appear on the discs and labels.
I can conduct tutorials and seminars, with registration fees, to teach OpenOffice.org software with built-in Help instructions manual.
I can export all documents created by Writer, Calc, Draw, Base and Math into .pdf (portable document format) and attach the .pdf documents to my emails. Recipients of my emails do not have Microsoft Word or Excel programs and/or OpenOffice.org Writer or Calc in their computers. But all of them have Adobe Reader program installed in their computer that can read .pdf files.
I strongly recommend the OpenOffice.org software because it is free forever, not on trial basis, and I saved a lot of money. If you are interested to download OpenOffice.org software package, you may visit http://www.openoffice.org/product/index.html .
